The Santee Cooper Reservoir consists of two large bodies of water, Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie, located in South Carolina. Covering over 170,000 acres, it was created as part of the Santee Cooper Power and Navigation Project in the mid-20th century to address power needs and enhance navigation. The reservoir's formation dramatically transformed the landscape, creating a diverse habitat for numerous species. The area is rich in wildlife, including bald eagles and alligators, making it an excellent location for nature photography and bird watching. The reservoir offers abundant recreational activities such as fishing for largemouth bass and catfish, kayaking, and boating. Historical sites around the reservoir highlight its significance during the Revolutionary War and its development through the New Deal programs.
